How long does the walk through Vintgar Gorge take?

The actual path through the gorge, following the famous wooden walkways right above the water, is about 1.6 kilometers long. If you were to walk at a normal pace without stopping, you would only need about 30 minutes because the path is mostly flat. In reality, however, it takes longer. Most visitors spend 45 to 60 minutes reaching the large waterfall at the end. This is because the scenery is so impressive that you will likely stop often to take photos or enjoy the view.

The One-Way System and What It Means

A very important detail for your planning is the one-way system. You cannot simply turn around at the end of the gorge and walk back the same way. To return to the entrance, you must follow one of the marked hiking trails over the surrounding hills. This means your visit is not just a walk through the canyon, but a full circular hike. This adds more variety and great views to your trip, but it also increases the total time you will be on the move.

Choosing Your Return Path

Once you reach the Šum Waterfall at the end of the gorge, you have two choices for your way back to the starting point:

  • The Path via St. Catherine’s Church: This route is ideal if you want wide panoramic views. It is about 4 kilometers long and takes roughly 85 minutes. It is a longer but more gentle walk.
  • The Steep Forest Path: If the weather is very hot or you prefer a shorter route, choose the forest trail. This path takes about 75 minutes. It is steeper and includes nearly 300 steps through the cool shade of the woods.

Total Duration: Vintgar Gorge Walking Time

For the entire experience—from entering the gorge to returning to your car—you should plan for 1.5 to 2 hours. Because entry is managed with fixed time slots, it is a good idea to arrive at the entrance center about 15 minutes before your booked slot. By including this extra time, you can enjoy the hike without any stress and have enough time for breaks at the best viewpoints.
