The opening hours of the Vintgar Gorge depend on the season and weather conditions. The gorge is usually open from spring to autumn, but closed during the winter months. When is the best time to visit?
If you really want to experience the Vintgar Gorge, you should avoid peak times. Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., you’ll fall right into the “crowd trap.” People are crammed onto the narrow wooden walkways, and you’ll hardly notice the idyllic scenery for all the elbows. We made that mistake on our visit!
The best thing to do is go as an “early bird.” In the height of summer, the Vintgar Gorge opens at 7 a.m. It’s early, but totally worth it: the light in the gorge is still wonderfully soft and perfect for photos, without people constantly walking into your frame. Plus, you’ll still have that peaceful feeling where you can really hear the water roaring.
GOOD TO KNOW
To avoid crowds, it’s recommended to visit the gorge right when it opens or in the late afternoon. Also note that during peak season, it’s best to book your ticket online in advance to avoid long waiting times – and to guarantee you get a ticket at all.
