Vintgar Gorge Waterfall: Šum Waterfall
The Šum Waterfall or Slap Šum in Slovenian, marks the end of the hike through the famous Vintgar Gorge. At the end of the gorge, the water plunges 13 meters, forming the waterfall. For many, it is a highlight of the hike through the gorge. It is a significant natural monument and the largest river waterfall in Slovenia. Its name, “Šum,” means “noise” or “roar,” perfectly describing the thundering natural spectacle it offers.

Geological and geographical features
The waterfall is a fascinating result of geological processes. It plunges from a height of approximately 13 meters into a deep basin carved into the rock by the cascading water. This process of “retrograde erosion” has shaped the waterfall over time, with the water slowly carving its way upstream into older rock. The Šum Waterfall is the only river waterfall in the entire Triglav National Park and is therefore a major attraction in the region.
Geographically, the waterfall is located at the eastern end of the Vintgar Gorge, near the village of Blejska Dobrava. Although it marks the end of the hike for most visitors, historically it was the area’s original attraction. Even before the gorge was developed in 1893, the Šum Waterfall was a popular destination.
The hike to the waterfall & the best viewpoint
As part of the current one-way system in the gorge, the Šum Waterfall is the last major highlight before you choose one of the two return routes. The hike through the gorge leads along wooden walkways and bridges beside the Radovna River, which culminates in this impressive waterfall at the end of the trail.
You can experience the waterfall from two different perspectives: From the upper viewing platform, which you reach directly after passing through the gorge, you have a great view from above. For the full experience, however, you should descend the stairs. There, a small wooden bridge leads you right to the edge of the waterfall, where you can feel the enormous power of the cascading water up close.
Free entry to the Vintgar Gorge Waterfall
Entry to the waterfall is generally free. It’s located outside the Vintgar Gorge, which has an entrance fee. Therefore, the Šum Waterfall can be reached without visiting the Vintgar Gorge. The waterfall is situated at the eastern end of the gorge, near the village of Blejska Dobrava. While most visitors experience the waterfall as the final stop on their hike through the gorge, it can also be reached via a shorter route from Blejska Dobrava. This allows you to explore the waterfall without paying an entrance fee.
This path is part of the two circular routes that lead from the end of the gorge back to the starting point. If you want to visit the Šum Waterfall directly, you can descend to it from Blejska Dobrava via a marked trail. However, please note that the path is partly steep and includes steps.
Vintgar Gorge Waterfall Opening Hours
If you hike from Blejska Dobrava to the Vintgar Gorge waterfall, you don’t need to worry about opening times. Anyone hiking through the Vintgar Gorge and then wanting to reach the waterfall can only do so during the gorge’s opening hours.
Personal conclusion
The Šum Waterfall marks the end of the Vintgar Gorge and is a truly beautiful sight. The roar is particularly loud after heavy rainfall or during the spring snowmelt, making the natural spectacle most impressive. It’s definitely worth seeing if you’re visiting the Vintgar Gorge. However, it’s worth noting that there are far larger and more spectacular waterfalls in the surrounding area of Triglav National Park. Those seeking the ultimate waterfall experience will find it at Peričnik Waterfall or Savica Waterfall, for example. These offer a completely different, even more magnificent backdrop. I wouldn’t travel here specifically for this waterfall.
